/ Why this drill
What it teaches.
In 6v6, the rush comes fast. Standing still is death. Pocket Movement teaches QBs to step up, slide, and reset their base while keeping their eyes downfield — the difference between a sack and a touchdown.
/ How to run it
Step by step.
- Set up four cones in a 4x4 yard pocket. QB starts in the middle.
- Coach calls 'up,' 'left,' 'right,' or 'reset' randomly.
- QB moves accordingly — step up, slide left, slide right, or reset to center.
- After each movement, QB throws to a stationary target 10-15 yards away.
- Run 8-10 reps with mixed calls.
/ Coaching points
What to watch for.
- Eyes stay downfield even while feet are moving. Never look at the rush.
- Slide, don't run. Crossover steps lose accuracy.
- Reset the base before throwing — both feet planted, hips square.
- Step UP first, away from the rush, before considering side movements.
/ Variations
Progress the drill.
With a rusher
Live rusher comes in slow motion. QB must move and throw with pressure.
On the move
QB throws WHILE moving (no reset). Tests advanced mechanics.
Out of pocket
QB extends play outside the pocket. Tests improvisation.
/ Common mistakes
Where it goes wrong.
- Looking at the ground — completely loses downfield vision.
- Crossover steps — kills throw mechanics.
- Throwing without resetting — wild inaccuracy.
- Drifting backwards instead of stepping up — magnifies the rush.
