/ Why this drill
What it teaches.
In K-4 divisions, a clean shotgun snap is the difference between a working offense and chaos. Shotgun Snap Rhythm pairs the center and QB in dedicated reps until the snap timing is automatic — every snap, same depth, every time.
/ How to run it
Step by step.
- Center and QB pair off. QB stands 3 yards behind the center in shotgun.
- Center snaps the ball through the air to the QB on a rhythmic cadence.
- QB receives the ball and either throws to a target or hands off.
- Run 20 reps minimum per pair. Switch out after 2 minutes.
/ Coaching points
What to watch for.
- Center: same arm motion every snap. Practice with eyes closed if needed.
- QB: hands ready before the snap. Don't reach — let the ball come to you.
- Same depth (3 yards) every time. Don't drift forward or back.
- Communication: silent count or verbal cadence — same every play.
/ Variations
Progress the drill.
Random cadence
Coach varies the snap count. Builds anticipation under pressure.
On a colorcall
Center snaps on a specific word from the QB. Tests focus.
With pressure
Add a defensive lineman. Tests timing under chaos.
/ Common mistakes
Where it goes wrong.
- Center snapping low — QB has to drop down, loses tempo.
- QB drifting closer or farther — destroys throw rhythm.
- Different cadences for different plays — defensive players read it.
- Insufficient reps — under 20 reps, the snap is still random.
