/ Why this drill
What it teaches.
Every pass concept in the playbook starts with the QB's drop. Bad footwork = bad rhythm = late throws and missed reads. Five-Step Footwork isolates the drop and the throw with no other complexity — just rhythm. Drill it cold, weekly, and the QB's accuracy will improve faster than from any other single intervention.
/ How to run it
Step by step.
- QB lines up at the LOS in shotgun (3 yards back) or under center.
- On a clap or whistle, QB drops 5 steps (or 3 for quick game).
- QB plants the back foot, transfers weight forward, and throws to a stationary target (cone or partner) 12 yards away.
- After the throw, QB walks back to the LOS and resets.
- Run 10 reps from the same side, then 10 from the opposite side.
/ Coaching points
What to watch for.
- Five clean steps — count out loud at first to enforce rhythm.
- Plant the back foot hard. The throw starts from the ground up.
- Hips rotate fully toward the target. Don't throw across your body.
- Follow through — hand finishes pointing at the target.
/ Variations
Progress the drill.
Three-step
Quick game drop — 3 steps for slants and quick outs.
Roll-out
After the drop, roll right or left and throw on the move.
Five then move
Drop 5, then take a small step up before throwing. Builds pocket awareness.
/ Common mistakes
Where it goes wrong.
- Wide steps — throws off rhythm and timing.
- Throwing flat-footed — no power, no accuracy.
- Hips not rotating — throws end up wide right (for righties).
- No follow-through — the ball wobbles and dies.
